Getting There

Anantnag sits on the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH44), about 55 km south of Srinagar and a long day's drive — sometimes longer with traffic, weather, or security closures — from Jammu in the south.

By road. Shared taxis (sumos) leave for Srinagar throughout the day from the main stand near Khanabal junction and take around an hour and a half in normal conditions. State buses run on the same route, slower and cheaper. From the south, Jammu is 8–12 hours by shared taxi, depending on the road; the Jawahar Tunnel is the chokepoint and can close for hours after snow.

By rail. Anantnag has a station on the Kashmir Valley railway line, with regular services running between Baramulla in the north and Banihal in the south. The trains are slow but cheap and connect through the valley with stops at Bijbehara, Awantipora, Pampore, and Srinagar.

By air. The nearest airport is Srinagar (SXR), with daily flights to Delhi, Mumbai, and other Indian cities. From the airport take a taxi or shared sumo down NH44 to Anantnag.
