When to Go

The Kashmir Valley has four real seasons, and Anantnag follows the valley pattern closely.

Spring (March to May) is the prettiest time — orchards in blossom around the town, cool air, the gardens at Achabal and Verinag at their best. Bring a warm layer for the evenings.

Summer (June to August) is warm and dry, with daytime temperatures in the mid-twenties. This is peak season for trips up to Pahalgam and the Lidder Valley, and roads, lodgings, and gardens are at their busiest.

Autumn (September to November) is the most beautiful season — the chenar trees turn deep red and gold, the saffron harvest happens in late October around Pampore, and the air is crisp. Late October to early November is a small window worth planning around.

Winter (December to February) is cold and snowy, with daytime temperatures often below freezing. The gardens are closed or empty, but a few days of snow on the Martand Sun Temple is striking if you do not mind the cold.
