Eating Out

Bijapur is not a culinary destination, but the local food has its character. North Karnataka cuisine is heavier and spicier than the southern Karnataka equivalent, and Bijapur sits between Hindu Lingayat traditions and the Muslim legacy of the sultanate.

Hotel Madhuvan, a vegetarian dining hall near the bus station, does a reliable thali at lunch — jowar roti, several curries, sweet — for around 100 rupees. The Kanishka restaurant near the railway station handles both veg and non-veg. For Hyderabadi-style biryani, the small Muslim restaurants around the Jama Masjid are the most authentic; ask for Hotel Hyderabad House if you can find it.

Local sweets are worth seeking out: kunda, a caramelised milk preparation, is the regional specialty. The market lane near Asar Mahal has several small shops selling it by the box.
