Getting Around

The major monuments are spread around the old city — Gol Gumbaz at the east end, Ibrahim Rauza at the west, Malik-E-Maidan and Upli Burj on the west wall, the Jama Masjid in the centre. The walking distance from end to end is about 3 kilometres each way, too far in the heat of the day.

Auto-rickshaws are the practical answer. Most monuments are signed and drivers know them all; a half-day hire to do the main circuit runs around 500 rupees. Negotiate the rate before getting in. Cycle rickshaws are still common for shorter hops in the bazaar area.

Renting a bicycle for a day is a good option in winter (November to February) when the heat is manageable. A few small shops near the bus station hire bikes for 100–200 rupees a day.
