Gokarna's most sacred site, the Mahabaleshwara Temple dates to the 4th century CE and is considered one of the most important Shiva temples in southern India. The complex is built in the Dravidian style with a multi-tiered gopuram (entrance tower) and a central tank. Pilgrims come from across Karnataka and beyond to perform rituals here, particularly during Shivaratri when the town fills to capacity.
Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the innermost sanctum but can enter the outer courtyard. The atmosphere around the temple — the car street lined with priests' houses, the smell of incense and camphor, the sound of bells and chanting — is worth experiencing even if you cannot visit the inner shrine. The ritual bathing tank, Kotiteertha, is just a few minutes' walk away and pilgrims use it at dawn and dusk.
Dress respectfully to visit — cover shoulders and legs. Remove shoes at the entrance. Photography inside the temple precinct is restricted.
