Kozhikode Beach

Long curving city beach with two old piers

The Kozhikode (Calicut) beach is a long arc of brown sand on the western edge of the city, lined for two kilometres by promenading families and pushcart snack vendors. Two crumbling wooden-and-iron piers stretch out into the Arabian Sea — what is left of the colonial-era Calicut Port, once busy with spice clippers and now used mostly by fishermen and selfie-takers.

Evening is when the beach lights up: kids on the sand, vendors selling kadala-mittai (peanut brittle) and unakka-meen (dried fish), and the late-afternoon trawler fleet motoring back to harbour. Don't swim — currents are unpredictable and the water around the piers is dirty — but the walk is one of the great free pleasures of the city.
