Tali Shiva Temple

14th-century royal temple in classical Kerala style

The Tali Temple, built around 1300 by the Zamorin Swamy Tirumulpad, was the royal temple of the Kozhikode kings and is still the great Shiva sanctuary of the city. It is built in the typical Kerala temple style: low tiled roofs, wooden carvings, copper-clad gables and a small enclosed compound.

Non-Hindus may not enter the inner sanctum but the outer courtyards are open and quiet. Try to visit at dusk, when the oil lamps along the wall are lit and the elephants of the temple are brought back from their evening walk.
