Ashrafi Mahal

Ashrafi Mahal stands opposite the Jami Masjid and is one of Mandu's most ruinous major sites. The surviving arcades and platforms hint at a much larger complex, originally built as an Islamic college and later altered by successive rulers.

It is not as complete as the mosque across the road, but that is part of the appeal. The broken masonry, half-standing arches, and open sky give it the feeling of a place history has not bothered to tidy up.

A story
Ashrafi Mahal began as a madrasa opposite the Jami Masjid and later acquired a victory tower. The tower collapsed long ago, leaving a broken complex whose fragments are more evocative than tidy.
