Lohani Caves

The Lohani Caves are a small group of rock-cut caves near the Village Group of monuments. They are not grand in the way Jahaz Mahal or the Jami Masjid are grand, but they add depth to Mandu by showing an older, rougher layer of occupation.

The site is best treated as a short stop while exploring the central monuments. The appeal is atmosphere: cut rock, fragments of sculpture, and a sense that Mandu's history did not begin with the palaces.

A story
Archaeologists have found Hindu images around the Lohani Caves, a reminder that Mandu's plateau was sacred and settled before the sultanate made it a capital. The caves give a rougher, older counterpoint to the polished Afghan monuments nearby.
