Biryani Near Mecca Darwaza

The streets around the Mecca Darwaza (Mecca Gate) are lined with small restaurants and dhabas serving Aurangabadi biryani — a style distinct from Hyderabadi or Lucknowi biryani, cooked in the dum method with basmati rice and mutton, but spiced more lightly and finished with fried onions and fresh mint. Several of the better establishments have been operating for decades under the same family; look for the ones with a dedicated biryani pot (deg) visible at the entrance. Lunch is the main biryani service — arrive by 1pm before the best cuts run out. A full plate with raita is around ₹180–250.
