Over a hundred Buddhist rock-cut caves carved into a basalt cliff in the centre of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, about 33km north of south Mumbai. Excavated between the 1st and 9th centuries, the caves served as a monastery complex for Buddhist monks. The most complete caves contain carved stupas, meditation cells, and sculpted panels. The setting inside a working forest adds to the atmosphere — leopards live in the national park, though you're unlikely to encounter one on the main path. Accessible by road from the Borivali entrance to the national park; no public transport inside.
