The Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, popularly known as Mount Mary Church, is Mumbai's most important Catholic pilgrimage site, a 16th-century Portuguese-era church perched on a hilltop in Bandra. The white basilica with its twin towers overlooks the Arabian Sea and attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each September during the Bandra Fair (Mount Mary Fair), one of Mumbai's oldest and largest religious festivals.
The church is open year-round for Mass and visitors; the Bandra Fair week in September transforms the surrounding lanes into a vast street market with stalls, food vendors, and rides. The hilltop location gives excellent views over the western sea face and the coastline toward Juhu. The neighbourhood around the church — old Bandra's fisher-Catholic community — preserves a village atmosphere in the middle of the suburbs.
