A seaside suburb in the western suburbs with one of Mumbai's few public beaches, long associated with the Bollywood film industry — many of the biggest film stars have their bungalows in Juhu, and the beach is where ordinary Mumbaikars come to eat street food in the evenings and on weekends. Juhu Beach itself is wide, long, and extremely busy on holiday evenings, with vendors selling bhel puri, pav bhaji, and sugarcane juice all along the strip.
The neighbourhood sits at the junction between the creative wealth of the film industry and the functional life of Mumbai's western suburbs. ISKCON Mumbai — the Hare Krishna temple built in 1978 — is one of the largest Krishna temples in the world and serves a surprisingly good vegetarian meal in its restaurant. The Juhu Aerodrome, the first commercial airport in India (opened 1930), is long closed to scheduled traffic but its old colonial-era buildings survive as a hotel compound.
