The ridge that forms the western spine of the city, long the most exclusive residential address in Mumbai and one of the most expensive in India. The Governor of Maharashtra's official residence is here, as are many of the city's oldest and wealthiest families, in a mixture of colonial bungalows, Parsi mansions, and newer apartment towers, all set back from streets that are lined with trees and relatively quiet by Mumbai standards.
Hanging Gardens (Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens) at the top of the hill offers views across the city and the Back Bay, with topiary animals that have been a peculiar feature since the 1880s. Immediately below is the Kamala Nehru Park, with its famous old-woman-shoe playground structure and a panorama south across the bay. The Banganga Tank — a ancient sacred tank in a valley on the western slope — is a remarkable survival: stone ghats, small temples, and resident priests around a tank of remarkably clear water, seemingly unchanged for centuries, while the city presses in from every side.
