Mapro Garden

Strawberry-themed garden and food court on the Mahabaleshwar road

Mapro Garden is the strawberry empire of Panchgani made visitor-friendly: a landscaped garden built around the company's factory shop on the Panchgani–Mahabaleshwar highway, with a restaurant, an ice-cream parlour, a chocolate workshop and tasting counters for jams, syrups, juices and pickles. It is a tourist trap by any objective measure, but the strawberries-and-cream are excellent in season, the food is reliably decent, and the place is unavoidable.

It gets crowded at weekends, particularly during the strawberry festival in March or April when the company hosts open-garden events. Outside those times, a half-hour stop on the way to or from Mahabaleshwar is enough. Beware of the queues for the chocolate dipping demonstrations, which can be longer than the queues for the food.

A story
Mapro started life in 1959 as the Mahabaleshwar Products Cooperative, a small jam-making outfit that bought the strawberries that Western Ghats farmers struggled to sell. The company is now one of India's largest fruit-processing brands, and almost single-handedly built the demand that made strawberries a profitable crop for the surrounding villages.
