Getting Around

Pune is a sprawling city and distances between attractions can be significant. Auto-rickshaws are the most common way to get around -- they run on meters, though you may need to insist on it. Agree on the fare before getting in if the driver refuses to use the meter.

App-based ride services like Ola and Uber work well in Pune and are often the most convenient option, especially for longer trips. Prices are reasonable by international standards.

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) runs a network of city buses that covers most of the city. The routes can be confusing for first-time visitors, but buses are cheap and frequent on major corridors.

The Pune Metro opened its first lines in 2023, connecting Pimpri-Chinchwad to the city center and running through Shivajinagar. More lines are under construction and will eventually make getting around much easier.

For day trips to forts and hill stations outside the city, hiring a car with driver for the day is the most practical option. Rates are reasonable -- negotiate a full-day rate rather than paying by the kilometer.

Pune was once famous as a cycling city, but traffic has made that less practical on major roads. In quieter areas like the university campus or cantonment, cycling remains pleasant.
