German Bakery

A North Main Road cafe that began as the place where the Osho ashram's Western visitors ate breakfast, and grew into one of Pune's best-known institutions. The menu is long: brown bread and seed loaves, Israeli breakfasts, hummus, sandwiches, falafel, pasta, and a row of European-style cakes in the glass case at the front.

It is open early and stays busy until late. Sit outside under the trees if you can. The clientele is the usual Koregaon Park mix -- foreign travellers, sannyasins, Pune students, IT crowd -- and the people-watching is as good as the bread.

A story
The original German Bakery, opened in the 1980s by a German member of the Osho ashram, was destroyed in a 2010 bomb attack that killed seventeen people. The rebuilt cafe reopened in 2013 on the same spot and remains a Koregaon Park fixture.
