Imphal, the state capital, is the natural day trip from Churachandpur — roughly three hours by bus or shared jeep. The city has a different character: Meitei rather than Kuki, the valley rather than the hills. Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India, lies south of Imphal and is known for its floating islands of vegetation (phumdis), some large enough to support fishing communities. The Second World War cemeteries at Imphal and nearby Kohima record some of the most intense fighting of the Burma campaign; they are carefully maintained and quietly affecting.
Areas close to the Myanmar border to the south and east of Churachandpur are restricted and require additional permits beyond the standard ILP. Check current regulations before attempting to travel in that direction.
