Built in 1865 by a wealthy Jain merchant, the Ajmer Jain Temple — known as Soniji Ki Nasiyan, the Red Temple — looks unremarkable from outside. Inside the main hall, a separately-ticketed museum contains a vast gilded diorama depicting the Jain version of the universe: the holy mountain Meru, ranks of celestial pavilions, processions of figurines, and (anachronistically) flying machines.
The diorama is roped off and not large in floor area, but the level of gold leaf and tiny detail rewards a slow visit. Modest dress, no leather, no photography of the diorama itself.
