Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri

The Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri is an 84-pillared cenotaph built in honour of a wet-nurse of Rao Raja Anirudh Singh in the 18th century. Located a short distance from the town centre, it is a beautiful and unexpected structure: a multi-tiered pavilion with intricately carved pillars, arches, and a small Shiva shrine at its base.

The site is relatively off the tourist trail compared to the palace and step-wells, which means you may have it to yourself. The carving quality is high and the setting, near a dry riverbed with views back toward the fort, is genuinely atmospheric. Worth combining with a visit to nearby Nawal Sagar Lake and the surrounding ghats.

A story
The "84 Pillared Cenotaph" gets its name from the 84 pillars that support its three-tiered structure — 84 being a sacred number in Hinduism representing the 84 lakh life-forms through which a soul cycles before liberation. The cenotaph was built for Deva, a nurse who served the royal family, which itself is unusual — royal cenotaphs were typically reserved for rulers and warriors.
