Taragarh Fort

Taragarh Fort looms over Bundi from a steep hillside, its massive walls and towers visible from almost anywhere in town. The fort is largely in ruins and overgrown with trees, which only adds to its atmosphere — langur monkeys rule the upper battlements and the views over the old city are stunning.

The climb up takes 20–30 minutes from the palace below. Much of the interior is crumbling, but the main gateway, cisterns, and several towers remain intact and explorable. Come early in the morning or in the late afternoon for light and temperatures, and to avoid the midday heat on the exposed hillside. The fort has no fixed entry fee but a donation may be requested at the gate.

A story
Taragarh means "star fort" in Hindi, named for its unusual star-shaped plan — a design intended to create overlapping fields of fire so that no wall section could be attacked without exposure from another. The approach zigzags up the hillside through a series of gates, each one designed so that a charging elephant could not build momentum. The fort was never taken by siege.
