About six kilometres southwest of Chittorgarh lies the Bhojunda Stromatolite Park, a geological site preserving some of the oldest fossil traces in India. The stromatolites — layered rock structures formed by mat-forming bacteria — are approximately 1.6 billion years old and are exposed in a rocky field that has been designated a protected geological monument.
The site is unusual and little-visited, making it one of Chittorgarh's genuine off-the-beaten-track attractions. An auto-rickshaw from town makes the trip easily. The rocky outcrops look, at first glance, like ordinary limestone — but the layered, dome-shaped structures within them are the preserved remains of vast cyanobacterial mats from a time long before complex life existed. An interpretive board at the site explains the geological significance.
