Jaipur Literature Festival

The world's largest free literary festival, held at Diggi Palace each January

Address Diggi Palace, Shivaji Nagar, Jaipur

The Jaipur Literature Festival — held at Diggi Palace every January since 2006 — has grown from a small gathering to what its organizers justifiably call the "greatest literary show on Earth." For five days, the pink-plastered courtyards of Diggi Palace host hundreds of writers from across the world: novelists, poets, politicians, historians, scientists, and filmmakers in conversation with each other and with audiences of tens of thousands.

What makes the festival remarkable is that admission is free. This is not a corporate literary event for publishing professionals — it genuinely draws students, housewives, retired teachers, and curious visitors alongside the celebrity author circuit. The sessions are simultaneous, which means you're always missing something, but the serendipitous quality of wandering between talks is part of the experience.

The January timing also coincides with Jaipur's most pleasant weather. The festival has spawned satellite events and editions elsewhere, but the original in Diggi Palace remains the one worth attending.
