Laxmi Mishtan Bhandar (LMB)

Old-school Jaipur institution for sweets, thalis, and Rajasthani snacks since 1954

Address Johari Bazar, Pink City, Jaipur

Laxmi Mishtan Bhandar — universally known as LMB — is one of those places that has been feeding Jaipur since 1954 and shows no signs of changing anything. The ground floor is a sweet shop and snack counter; upstairs is a pure vegetarian restaurant serving Rajasthani thalis and North Indian food in the reliable, slightly formal style of an older-generation Indian restaurant.

The real reason to come is the sweets. LMB makes some of the best in the city — the ghevar (latticed sweet soaked in sugar syrup), the mawa kachori (sweet pastry filled with nuts and dried fruit), and the various milk-based sweets are all very good. The pyaaz kachori (savory onion pastry) is another specialty that Jaipur does better than anywhere else in India, and LMB's version is consistently good.

Located on Johari Bazaar, which makes it an easy stop during shopping. The ground floor gets packed; the restaurant upstairs is calmer. Expect modest prices, slow service during rush times, and a crowd that's as much local as tourist.
