Nahargarh Fort

Hilltop fort on the Aravalli ridge with the best views over Jaipur

Address Krishna Nagar, Brahampuri, Jaipur
Opening Hours 10:00-17:30 daily

Nahargarh Fort sits on the rocky Aravalli ridge above Jaipur and offers the best panoramic views over the Pink City and the surrounding landscape. Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1734 as a defensive strongpoint, it was later extended under Sawai Ram Singh to include a row of queens' apartments — nine identical suites with a shared royal corridor, built so the king could visit each wife without any jealousy about who was favored.

The drive or walk up to the fort is worthwhile in itself, winding through rocky hillside. Inside, the Madhavendra Bhawan palace with its painted interiors is the main draw. The wax museum inside the fort is optional. What you're really here for is the roof terrace, which gives you one of those panoramas of Jaipur that you'll see in every photograph — the pink and terracotta city spreading out below.

Come at sunset or on a clear morning for the best light. The fort is also popular on evenings when the city lights up below.

A story
The fort's name means 'Abode of Tigers' and refers to the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia, a Rathore prince whose ghost allegedly disturbed the original construction — every wall built during the day would collapse by morning until a shrine was built in his honor.
