Niros has been on MI Road since 1949 — a remarkable run in the notoriously fickle Indian restaurant trade. The decor is pleasantly dated, the air conditioning works, the menu covers Mughlai, Rajasthani, Chinese, and continental food, and virtually everything on it is done well if not spectacularly. This is the kind of place that has survived by doing the basics right, consistently, for three generations of customers.
The laal maas (spicy lamb curry in yogurt-based red sauce) and the dal baati churma are the picks from the Rajasthani section. The Continental section is a reminder of the era when "continental" meant something sophisticated in the Indian dining scene — the club sandwiches and grilled items are fine. The fresh lime soda is excellent.
It's not the most exciting place to eat in Jaipur, but it's one of the most reliable — no elaborate tourist traps, reasonable prices, and a genuine sense of continuity with the city's history.
