Raj Mandir Cinema

Jaipur's art deco 'Pride of Asia' cinema, one of the most beautiful movie palaces in India

Address Bhagwan Das Rd, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur

Raj Mandir is one of the most extraordinary cinema buildings in India — a 1976 meringue-fantasy of art moderne and 1970s Bollywood excess, all curved plasterwork, ornate chandeliers, and layers of balconies in crimson and gold. It seats 1400 people and is known locally as the "Pride of Asia."

Going to see a Bollywood film here is one of those experiences that's fundamentally different from anything in the West. The audience is participatory in the fullest sense — singing, clapping, shouting encouragement at the screen, and generally treating the cinema as a community event rather than a passive viewing experience. The building's interior is so over-the-top that it deserves a visit regardless of what's showing.

Check the schedule in advance, buy your tickets a day ahead (the place genuinely sells out), and go expecting to be as much a spectator of the audience as of the film. The cinema is on Bhagwan Das Road in the C-Scheme area, easily reachable from the old city.
