The small lake in the centre of Mount Abu town is the focal point of an evening stroll. Pedal boats and rowing boats are available for hire from the eastern jetty. The walk around the lake takes about 45 minutes and passes a string of named granite outcrops — Toad Rock and Nun Rock being the most photographed — and the rather kitsch promenade of food stalls and souvenir shops. A statue of Gandhi stands above the lake at Gandhi Ghat, where his ashes were partly immersed.
Nakki Lake
A story
Local legend has it that the lake was dug overnight by the gods using only their fingernails (nakh) — hence Nakki Lake — to provide a refuge for a sage being pursued by demons. The actual origin is geological: a small natural basin in the Aravalli granite that was deepened and walled by the Sirohi maharajas in the 19th century.
