Ganesh Temple (Ranthambore Fort)

The Trinetra Ganesh temple inside Ranthambore Fort is one of the most visited shrines in Rajasthan — not because pilgrims pass through the park to reach it, but precisely because they do. Each day, hundreds of devotees obtain a special permit to walk or take a vehicle to the fort for darshan. The temple dates to at least the 10th century and is carved into the rock of the fort's inner citadel.

The main image of Ganesh, worshipped here as "Trinetra" (three-eyed), is covered in sindoor and draped in fresh flowers every morning. The atmosphere inside the fort is a genuine mix of wildlife reserve and religious pilgrimage — you might round a corner to find a peacock perched on a battlement and a priest conducting aarti beside it. On Ganesh Chaturthi, the festival in August-September, tens of thousands of pilgrims converge here and the park entrance procedures become decidedly creative.

A story
The Trinetra Ganesh temple at Ranthambore is said to be the only temple in India where Ganesh is depicted with his entire family — wives Riddhi and Siddhi, and sons Shubh and Labh — all in a single image. Newly-weds across Rajasthan post invitation cards to the temple before their wedding; the postman actually delivers them.
