Day Trips

Udaipur is one of the best bases in India for day trips. The two essential excursions are Kumbhalgarh Fort (85 km north) — a vast 15th-century hill fort with a 36-km outer wall, second only to the Great Wall of China — and the Jain temples at Ranakpur (95 km), among the most intricately carved marble temples in the world. Both can be combined into a single long day with an early start.

Closer in: Eklingji and Nagda make a half-day trip north; Nathdwara (48 km, dedicated to Krishna as Shrinathji) is one of the holiest pilgrimage centres of the Vaishnavas; and the Chittorgarh Fort (115 km east) is the historic capital of Mewar and the site of three jauhars — mass self-immolations by Rajput women — between the 14th and 16th centuries. A full day, but unforgettable.
