The old city is best explored on foot — most of the main sights cluster within a 15-minute walk of the City Palace and the lanes are too narrow for anything bigger than a motorbike. Auto-rickshaws handle everything else: agree the fare beforehand or insist on the meter. A short hop within the old city should be ₹50–80; from the railway station into Lal Ghat about ₹150.
For further-out sights (Monsoon Palace, Shilpgram, Fateh Sagar) take an auto or hire a scooter for the day — several places on Lal Ghat rent Honda Activas for around ₹350–500 plus fuel. App-based cabs (Ola, Uber) work but availability is patchy. For day trips to Eklingji, Nathdwara, or Kumbhalgarh, hire a taxi for the day.
