About 22 km north of Udaipur, the Eklingji temple complex is the spiritual heart of the Mewar dynasty — a cluster of 108 white-marble shrines built around a four-faced lingam of Shiva, the family deity of the Mewar maharanas. The main shrine dates from the 8th century, rebuilt in the 15th after destruction by Sultan Alauddin Khilji.
Photography is strictly prohibited inside; bags, leather goods, and shoes must all be left at the gate. Visit on a Monday evening if you can — the temple comes alive for the aarti and the current maharana, if in town, attends in person. Best combined with the nearby Nagda ruins for a half-day trip.
