Island palace on Lake Pichola where Shah Jahan took refuge

An island palace on Lake Pichola, begun in the early 17th century and used as a refuge by Mughal prince Shah Jahan when he was in rebellion against his father. The yellow sandstone structure with its elephant-flanked entrance is striking from the water. You can visit by boat from the City Palace jetty.

The palace gardens are small but well-maintained, and the Gul Mahal pavilion is worth a look. There is a restaurant on the island if you want to linger. It is less famous than the Lake Palace on the neighbouring island but more accessible and arguably more atmospheric.
