Shilpgram

A rural arts and crafts complex 3 km west of the city, Shilpgram is an open-air museum of vernacular architecture — reconstructed mud-and-thatch houses from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Rajasthan, each furnished as it would have been by its original inhabitants. Resident artisans demonstrate weaving, pottery and embroidery in workshops scattered through the grounds.

The setting itself, against the dry Aravalli foothills, is striking. Camel rides, puppet shows and folk-dance performances run through the day. Slightly touristy, but well done and worth a half day, especially with children.

A story
Every December, Shilpgram hosts a ten-day craft fair that draws over a thousand artisans from across western India, with terracotta potters from Kutch, leatherworkers from Gwalior, miniature painters from Nathdwara, and lac-bangle makers from Hyderabad all working in front of you. It is the best place in India to see traditional crafts being practised at scale.
