Valparai

Quiet Anamalai hill station of tea estates, dams, rain forest, and wildlife corridors.

Valparai is a high tea town in the Anamalai Hills, reached from Pollachi by a long ghat road with hairpin bends, forest edges, and views back over the plains. It sits around 1,100 metres above sea level, cooler and quieter than Tamil Nadu's better-known hill stations.

The town itself is plain, but the surrounding landscape is excellent: tea estates roll across the plateau, Nallamudi Poonjolai looks out over forested valleys, and the dams at Sholayar and Nirar turn the hills into wide sheets of water. The wider Anamalai Tiger Reserve brings real ecological weight, with elephants, hornbills, lion-tailed macaques, and other Western Ghats wildlife moving through the forests around the estates.

Valparai is not a place for nightlife or polished resort comforts. It is best for slow drives, misty mornings, estate walks where permitted, and the sense of being in a working hill landscape rather than a showpiece.
