Forest Research Institute

The FRI campus is the strangest and most impressive piece of architecture in the city — a vast Indo-Saracenic edifice set in 450 hectares of forest, with kilometres of arcaded corridors and seven small museums covering everything from timber to pathology to forest entomology.

A single ticket covers all the museums. Allow at least two hours, and bring water — the corridors are long. The lawns and forest paths are public and a favourite weekend walk for Doon residents.

A story
The colossal red-brick building was designed by C. G. Blomfield in 1929 in a Greco-Roman-Mughal hybrid style that was meant to embody British forestry science in the subcontinent. The main facade is reportedly the longest purely brick-built structure in the world; the building is so big it has appeared on Indian banknotes.
