Dehradun

Uttarakhand capital in the green Doon Valley, framed by Himalayan foothills and old cantonment institutions

Dehradun sits in the Doon Valley, a wide, green basin between the Himalayan foothills and the Shivalik range. It is the capital of Uttarakhand and the starting point for trips into the mountains — Mussoorie is just 35 kilometres uphill, and the road to Rishikesh and the high Himalayas passes through.

The city itself is not a tourist destination in the usual sense, but it has a character worth spending a day or two on. The old cantonment area is leafy and calm, lined with colonial-era buildings and boarding schools that have educated generations of Indian elites — the Indian Military Academy, the Forest Research Institute, and the Doon School are all here. The clock tower at the centre of the bazaar area anchors a lively, congested old city where you can find good street food and local life without any tourist veneer.

Dehradun's climate is one of its best features. Winters are cool but not harsh, summers are warm but far more bearable than the plains below, and the monsoon turns everything impossibly green. If you are heading into the hills, the city makes a practical base with good transport connections, decent restaurants, and a pace of life that feels unhurried compared to Delhi, just six hours south.
