Mall Road

Mussoorie's ridge-top promenade running between the two ends of town

Mall Road is the spine of Mussoorie — a two-kilometre promenade running along the crest of the ridge between Library Bazaar to the west and Picture Palace to the east. Closed to private vehicles during peak hours, it is the place where the entire town passes at some point during the day: families, honeymooners, school groups, old men with walking sticks, chai vendors.

The road has the usual assortment of shops, restaurants, and horse-ride touts that characterises Indian hill stations. What it also has is the view — north toward the snow peaks on clear days, south across the vast green Doon Valley. The evening stroll here, when the light is golden and the mountains are backlit, is a Mussoorie institution. The stretch near Kulri Bazaar in the middle is the most lively.
