Chandra Shekhar Azad Park

Chandra Shekhar Azad Park — also known by its former colonial name, Alfred Park — is the main civic garden of Allahabad, a large green space in the Civil Lines neighbourhood housing the Allahabad Museum, the Public Library, and various monuments. The park is named for the independence movement hero who died here in 1931, and his memorial within the grounds remains a place of genuine veneration.

The park is pleasant for a morning walk, particularly in the cooler months. The combination of colonial-era buildings, tree-lined paths, and the museum makes it a reasonable half-day destination for those interested in the city's history as much as its religious sites. In the evenings it fills with joggers, families, and students from the nearby university.

A story
On 27 February 1931, the revolutionary Chandra Shekhar Azad was cornered by British police in this park — then called Alfred Park. Refusing to surrender, he kept fighting until his last bullet, which he used on himself rather than be taken alive. He was 24 years old. The park was renamed in his honour after independence, and the spot where he died is marked by a memorial that Allahabad's residents still visit regularly.
