Jhansi's main draw is its 1857 history. The fort, the queen's palace, and the memorials to Rani Lakshmibai are the obvious starting points, and they repay careful exploration. Beyond the history, the cantonment area has an eerie colonial cemetery, and the broad bazaars around the fort hill give a feel for Bundelkhand's market culture. Budget at least half a day for the fort and Rani Mahal; the rest of the sights are compact enough to cover on foot or by auto-rickshaw.
