Ghaghar Burhi Temple

Ghaghar Burhi is a small shrine to a form of the goddess Kali, set in a ravine on the eastern edge of Asansol. The image of the goddess is a black stone marked with vermilion, kept in a simple structure under trees, and the surroundings — a wooded gorge, a stream, a procession of pilgrims on weekends — are more interesting than the building itself.

The festival of Kali Puja in October or November is the busiest time. Most other days it is a quiet, slightly atmospheric stop a few kilometres east of central Asansol. Local rickshaws know the place.

A story
Local tradition says the goddess revealed herself to a cattle-herder who found his cows lowing at a particular spot in the ravine. The shrine has remained tied to that exact stone ever since — it is not a built temple in the conventional sense but a natural setting where a stone is worshipped, which makes it unusually atmospheric for a place this close to a major industrial city.
