The National Institute of Technology Durgapur (formerly Regional Engineering College) was established in 1960 as one of India's early public technical universities, part of the same nation-building project that created the steel plant and the planned city around it. The campus is large and relatively leafy, occupying a quiet corner of the city near the Steel Township.
NIT Durgapur is not a conventional tourist sight, but the campus has a pleasant mid-century institutional character — broad roads, brick buildings, and the feeling of a self-contained academic community. The institute is nationally respected in engineering education. For those with an interest in India's post-independence modernist architecture and institutions, it is worth a walk through.
