Tajpur

Quiet Purba Midnapur beach where casuarina shade and red crabs mark a simpler Bengal coast.

Tajpur is a quiet beach in Purba Midnapur district, about four hours by road from Kolkata and just a few kilometres from Mandarmani. It is less developed and less visited than nearby Digha, which is a strong recommendation in itself. The beach is wide, the sand is clean, and the shoreline is backed by stands of casuarina trees that provide welcome shade.

The appeal of Tajpur is its simplicity. This is a place to walk along the beach, eat fresh seafood at one of the small shacks near the water, and watch the red crabs scuttle across the sand at low tide — the crabs are a distinctive feature of this stretch of coast and make for an unusual sight. The sea is calm enough for swimming most of the year, though the monsoon months bring rough surf.

Tajpur has grown in popularity with weekenders from Kolkata, and a handful of beach resorts and guesthouses have sprung up along the shore. Booking ahead is advisable on weekends and holidays. The area between Tajpur and Mandarmani can be explored on foot or by motorcycle along the coastal road. For a day trip, the Shankarpur fish market is nearby and worth an early morning visit.

Things to Do

Tajpur is a beach village, and the main activity is the beach itself — walking, swimming, watching the red crabs at low tide, and eating fresh seafood. There is not much organised activity here, which is precisely the point for visitors who want a quieter alternative to the busier beaches at Digha and Mandarmani.
