Pura Petitenget

Pura Petitenget is a coastal temple set just back from the beach at the north end of Seminyak — one of the chain of sea temples built by the priest Nirartha along Bali's south-west coast. It is much smaller than Tanah Lot or Uluwatu, but it has the same low-walled compound, stepped gates, and clusters of moss-darkened shrines.

Visitors are not usually allowed into the inner courtyards but can walk the outer enclosure. The atmosphere is best at the temple's festival days (odalan), when locals arrive with offerings and priests perform purification ceremonies on the beach. A sarong is required to enter — they are lent at the gate.

A story
The name 'Petitenget' means 'mysterious box' in Balinese — a reference to a magic chest said to have been left behind by the 16th-century Hindu sage Dang Hyang Nirartha when he passed through. The box is supposedly still kept somewhere in the temple, though nobody outside the priesthood has seen it in centuries.
