Citaman Megalithic Pools

On the lower slopes of Mount Pulosari, the megalithic bathing pools of Citaman are one of the older ritual sites in western Java. Seven shallow stone basins, fed by living springs, sit on a quiet terrace shaded by old trees. Locals still bring offerings here, and the place has a strong syncretic atmosphere of layered belief.

The walk in from the nearest road is short and easy through cool forest. Combine with a longer hike up Mount Pulosari, the small dormant volcano above, whose crater rim is reached in about three hours from the same trailhead.

A story
The seven bathing pools at Citaman are carved from massive single stones laid out in a deliberate pattern on the slope of Mount Pulosari. They are usually dated to the early first millennium AD — long before the Sultanate of Banten existed — and were almost certainly part of a pre-Islamic ritual landscape that included the springs and the summit of the volcano above.
