Pandeglang

Far-west Java regency and gateway to Ujung Kulon, the last refuge of the Javan rhinoceros

Pandeglang is a regency in the far west of Java, in Banten province. It is the primary gateway to Ujung Kulon National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the last refuge of the Javan rhinoceros. The landscape ranges from volcanic hills and natural springs to quiet beaches along the Sunda Strait.

The town itself is a modest regional hub about 114 km from Jakarta. Most visitors pass through on their way to Carita Beach or the national park, but the district rewards slower travel with the Cikoromoy springs, the megalithic bathing pools at Citaman on the slopes of Mount Pulosari, and the higher cone of Mount Karang — a relaxed rural atmosphere typical of western Banten.

From Jakarta, take the Merak toll road and exit at West Serang, then follow the Serang-Pandeglang highway south. The drive takes around two hours in normal traffic.
