Mount Karang

The cone of Gunung Karang rises to 1,778 metres about ten kilometres northwest of Pandeglang town, the highest point in Banten. The forested upper slopes are protected and home to lutung monkeys, gibbons, and a long list of endemic birds.

A trail starts near the village of Kadu Bumbang and climbs in five to seven hours to the summit ridge, where on clear days you can see the Sunda Strait and the cone of Anak Krakatau. Pilgrim huts near the top are still used by Sundanese mystics who come for tirakat — overnight ritual visits.

A story
Mount Karang is a dormant stratovolcano that has not erupted in historical times, but the slopes above 1,500 metres are still studded with fumaroles and hot springs. Local Sundanese tradition counts it among the magical mountains of Banten — the sultan of old Banten is said to have made an annual pilgrimage to its summit shrine.
