Kaibon Palace

Moat-ringed ruins of the Banten Sultanate's queen mother palace

The ruins of Kaibon Palace sit surrounded by a moat on the outskirts of old Banten (Serang). Built for the queen mother — the name derives from "ibu," meaning mother in Indonesian — it served as a regent's residence when the heir to the Banten Sultanate was too young to rule. What remains today are crumbling walls, a handsome gateway, and the moat, all slowly being reclaimed by vegetation. It's a quiet, atmospheric spot, usually empty of other visitors, and pairs well with nearby Surosowan Palace and the Grand Mosque of Banten.
