Baturraden is the highland resort area 14 km north of Purwokerto, set at around 700 metres on the southern slopes of Mount Slamet — Java's second-highest volcano. Buses and angkots run frequently from Terminal Purwokerto and the journey takes around 45 minutes, climbing through pine forest and tea plantations into a noticeably cooler microclimate. It is a long-standing weekend retreat for Javanese families, especially during school holidays when it gets crowded.
The main attractions are spread across the area: the Lokawisata park has small waterfalls, a swimming pool, walking trails and food stalls; the Pancuran Pitu ("seven spouts") hot springs higher up the mountain are fed by sulphurous water from Slamet's crater and are popular for the supposed healing properties of the warm mud; the Curug Telu waterfall is a 30-minute walk through forest. Bring warm clothing, especially in the early morning when temperatures can drop to 15°C. Avoid weekends if you want any quiet — Saturday and Sunday bring large crowds from Purwokerto and Cilacap.
