The Great Mosque of Surakarta (Masjid Agung) stands adjacent to the Keraton Kasunanan, connected to the palace complex by tradition and geography. The mosque was established in the 18th century under the patronage of the first Susuhunan after the kingdom's division, and it served as the royal prayer mosque of the court.
The architecture combines Javanese and Islamic elements — the characteristic tiered Javanese roof (with a shape derived from Hindu-Buddhist antecedents) sits above an interior organised for Islamic worship. Non-Muslim visitors can respectfully observe the exterior and enter some areas, but should dress conservatively and avoid prayer times.
